A pensive Thai business professional awaits an elevator.
This photo represents a bit of the other fun "work" I'm doing on the side while I'm in Bangkok. It's all too easy to develop rust with off-camera lighting skills so I try to take the time to pop a few flashes here and there, particularly when this model is available. The venue is Bangkok University located, ironically, outside metropolitan Bangkok near the far north of the city.
The setup shot showing our business woman (above) and fellow photographer, "The Fireball".
For the strobists out there, that's 2 lights, one an umbrella modifier and the other, (hidden behind the umbrella) is a bare bulb to add a bit of highlight separation for her hair. If memory serves me correctly, due to an already bright background, the photo above did not require the hair light.
Once the light stand is extended this high, the poor design of the stand becomes glaringly evident. I always make sure to tie the light stand to my camera bag (with a pair of caribiners) in order to prevent a toppling disaster. Also, note that as a traveler that doesn't care to pay excess baggage fees every flight I take, I try to minimize the amount of single-purpose items I carry. In a pinch, my tripod serves a second function as an impromptu light stand... and even a third function as a corner holder for my mosquito net!
